With over 280 hotspots in town , Y5 is already fuelling Hong Kong with WiFi and a rep from our friends at ZoiPPE sent us an email on how to get it free with their long distance service:

Basically, when you are at any of the Y5ZONE hotspots, view available networks, select “Y5ZONE”, click connect and than logon to ZoiPPE and start enjoying our services (including the current free calls to China offer) via FREE wifi.

There are Hot Spots all over Hong Kong Island especially at almost every McDonald’s!?!?! Click here for the full list. We’re going to try this out and try and blog some stuff from the funkiest McDonald’s we can find.

Crown Macau is 6-Star

New Macau hotel to be big on food!

crown.jpg

Melco’s new Crown Macau Hotel boasts to be 6-star and is due to open in Early Summer 2007. But the interesting thing is you may just want to go there to eat:

One tantalising highlight promises to be Tenmasa. Handed down through three generations of tempura masters, Tenmasa started as a tiny restaurant in the Kanda Sarugakucho district of Tokyo in 1937. Over time the Tenmasa name has become synonymous with the celebrities of Japan’s political and business scene.

Modeled on the exclusive central Tokyo restaurant, Tenmasa at Crown Macau will be the first brand extension outside Japan. It will emulate the intimate ambience of the Tokyo venue combining seductive modern design with Ozashiki (traditional tatami rooms). In true Japanese style, the highly skilled chefs will work their art before the diners using special metal chop sticks to sense the vibrations of the oil and the food to ensure that each dish is cooked to perfection and presented crisp and piping hot.

Well sounds pretty delicious already but what will the Mainland gamblers think? We mostly see the high-rollers hitting The Sands‘ Won Ton Noodle restaurant more than the amazing steakhouse upstairs.

Japanese Comics = True Believers!

Mainland adults believe ‘Death Note’ to be real.

deathnote.jpg

You must have heard of Death Note by now, unless you live on Lamma of course. People in China are having a hard time discerning fact from fiction it appears:

A notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it.” – As Death Note’s fame rose, it was bound to happen when someone would try to imitate the mysterious notebook found in the story. In early 2005, some schools in Shenyang, China banned the use of a stationery notebook in response to students using it as “Death Notes.” While some felt the ban was an over-reaction, the view that Death Note is “a poison that creates wicked hearts” remained in the minds of many Chinese parents and teachers and protect them from the “evil notebook.”

I bought one of them in Mong Kok for $25 a few months back. The comic is great, the movie is great and the anime is OK. If you are looking to read something incredibly complex seek it out in English, Japanese or Chinese.

The Return of the Burger King

Tuesday. 27 March. 2007. 9:05 am

It’s whopper time in Hong Kong again!

burgerking.jpg

Yes we have 2 Burger King outlets already, but even we’re not crazy enough to trek to the airport or the Peak just to have a Whopper - we want one down the street.

With the success of Triple O and other burger places in Hong Kong, it would seem “the burger” is being welcomed back into Hong Kongers stomach’s. Burger King announced that they will be bringing the franchise back to HK (and Macau) in an area they term as “downtown Hong Kong,” which I can only guess is American code for “Central.” OK, we still need to wait untill December, but it’s coming and that can only mean that maybe Wendy’s and Jack in the Box are on their way back, too.

UPDATE: A HK Burger King rep just informed us that there will be at least 4 new BK’s in HK in the business district (Central?), shopping area (Pacific Place/IFC?) and tourist spots (Disneyland?) in HK.

Review: Apocalypto

More violent men in underwear!

apocalypto.jpg

If you saw 300 before seeing Apocalypto, you might be a bit let down. While we were not thinking it was going to be the same type of film we did think it would be something different since it came from Mel Gibson (who is in the news again because of a tiff at CalState).

It’s hard to follow up Passion of The Christ, with anything without it being a let down. It’s like The Wachowski Brothers following up The Matrix with The Matrix Reloaded, the expectations are too high and even if the film is worthy your mind won’t let you think it right away, especially having recently watched 300 about barbaric men in underwear protecting their way of life from even more barbaric people who come to take over - which is essentially the same plot. The movie did come out in December 2006 in the U.S., and it is pretty amazing marketing that the Hong Kong distributor released this right after the huge box-office of 300 in Hong Kong.
