Fastest Broadband Alive

PCCW kicks up to 100 and 100M lines in Hong Kong.

flash.jpg

PCCW announced today the introduction of their new super-speed-faster-than-The-Flash broadband service. We reported about HK Broadband’s similar offer (and great TVC’s) last month, but their coverage wasn’t very strong. So of course leave it to PCCW, just as we ourselves are now shopping for a new HD-TV, that they kick in this new service that will see your broadband connection go from 10 times to 100 times faster than you have now. And yes this is for HOME users.

There is a price for such speed, The Flash got hit with lightning and chemicals to gain his super speed, us normal folks will be hit with a HK$588 and HK$2188 a month bill, respectively for the 100M and 1000M lines, compared to the basic $198 a month plan most people pay now for the basic 3-6Mb line.

Sounds a bit pricey, and should have been priced in the $388 to $1988 price range but if you are downloading large files and streaming video from the US, and hate any hiccups then this is for you. So, I’m sure we don’t have to tell you the big difference you will see after it jumps 10 times.

A total network solution package “1000M” provides customers with the high speed connectivity of NETVIGATOR Fiber Direct 1000M, together with NETVIGATOR Everywhere, the unique wireless broadband solution integrating High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), 3G and Wi-Fi services, and a high-definition TV experience. The service offers customers the most reliable and stable broadband experience everywhere - both on fiber and on wireless!

This is mostly to enhance NOW’s HD TV initiative, as early adopters with HD-TV’s are waiting for. The service is available now (see price plan sign-up info here) but you’ll probably be able to swing by any PCCW outlet and see it in action.

Hong Kong Movie Thursday

Thursday. 22 November. 2007. 12:04 pm

Ben Stiller and Jennifer Garner on the big screen today.

heartbreak.jpg

Today’s new U.S. movies are a pair of dud’s, but if you need to see something mildly funny Ben Stiller’s The Heartbreak Kid looks to be the winner by default. But really, how can most of the people behind the hilarious There’s Something About Mary go so wrong? Only a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sydney Bristow herself, is back in action in The Kingdom. Jennifer Garner aka Mrs. Affleck jumps into a military drama with Jamie Foxx that is also a let down. Average rating is 5.9/10 from our Tomato friends.

This means your best bet, if you haven’t seen it yet, is last week’s Beowulf. Buy tickets here or here.

Amazon’s New Ebook Reader

Tuesday. 20 November. 2007. 12:54 pm

Is the Kindle the thinking man’s iPod?

kindle.jpg

Amazon today launched its new eBook reader device and service in the U.S. called Kindle. Succintly put, it’s basically a book-reading version of the iPod. Using a special screen that can be read in sunlight and using minimal power, you can download books, magazines, blogs and manga from the internet and have it go right into your Kindle.

TechCrunch has some initial thoughts, mostly on how ugly it looks. Newsweek loves it. Interesting to point out is that it can download books anywhere. Its not relying on WiFi, but a built in network called Amazon WhisperNet based on a U.S. operator Sprint (hence it probably not working here in Hong Kong…yet.)

Our initial thoughts: great idea, great for Hong Kong with our shelves already overflowing with books. The Kindle even has a built in dictionary and wireless access to Wikipedia - woah! We’re sold! The only con right now is that it only displays in black and white, o you’ll only get greyscale images from your magazines, but of course a color model should be around the corner if user adoption is good on this model.

Click here to go to the Amazon page and watch videos and read up on all the features on this US$400 device that could really change the way we access newspapers and magazines. The part in the video where it automatically downloads your newspaper every morning is amazing.
