Butterboom goes back to the future.

Continuing until the last day of 2007, we’ll be re-posting some of the stories we’ve published on Butterboom.com since January of this year.
It’s neat to look back at what has come and gone and really weird to see how time has just flown by this year. H&M opened in March? Was it really that long ago? Anyways have a read and if you want to see more just use the “Melted Butter” pull down menu on the right column to read posts categorized week-by-week.
See you with new Butter in 2008!

Surf and play Nintendo DS with everyone on the MTR.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON BUTTERBOOM: July 17, 2007
From a story in the SCMP, it seems that the MTR has done tests with PCCW to start offering WiFi inside the trains themselves around Hong Kong very soon, making our city the first in the world to get this kind of service:
The service will first be introduced in station concourses and on platforms this summer. Wu Liang-tai, the company’s executive vice-president for emerging technology, said putting it in trains for access on the go was the next step.
A third-generation (3G) mobile-phone network allows users to connect to the internet on the move at speeds of 3.6 megabits per second.
Wi-fi (wireless fidelity) gives users online access at 54 megabits per second, fast enough to watch videos on the internet. It costs HK$20 a day for unlimited access.
On trains, it would work with receivers at each end of the train picking up a 3.5G signal from transmitters in the tunnel.
The Wi-fi network will give users access to the internet through Wi-fi-compatible devices such as laptop computers and mobile phones.
“Wi-fi is much cheaper than 3G for internet access, so we can deliver our content to users when they are on MTR trains,” Dr Wu said on the sidelines of a telecoms conference in Beijing.
Mobile operators charge about HK$100 per month for 10 megabytes of 3G use.

What the US early adopters are going to pay on Friday.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON BUTTERBOOM: June 27, 2007
Many readers have emailed us asking why we post iPhone news when it won’t come out till 2008 in Hong Kong. Well, truth be told we just love what we’ve seen so far and we have left alot of news out and just cherry picking the more interesting stuff. Like this - the breakdown of what Americans will pay to buy an iPhone and subscription when it’s released this Friday:
Choosing the entry-level iPhone (assuming no rebate) and the lowest possible price for a two-year contract, this is what we get:
iPhone (4 GB model):
US$499.00 plus tax
AT&T voice 450 minutes/mos.:
US$879.36
AT&T data:
US$839.76
TOTAL (2 years): US$2,218.12 plus tax
That’s not counting Apple’s Bluetooth headset (reported cost: US$129) or any protective covering you might buy to keep from scratching the glass screen.
I have a feeling that there will be a big change by the time it comes to Hong Kong (specifically a 3G version) read the rest of the article here to see what else you might be in for in 2008.

First touch screen phone is in Hong Kong.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON BUTTERBOOM: June 27, 2007
HTC has their new TOUCH phone out now at an affordable price if you want to get some of the Apple iPhone features right now. See the features and specs of the Touch phone here at their site.
CSL has a deal right now at HK$2,280 which includes the tariff plan saving around HK$1000 from the regular street price. Is the touchscreen flipping just a gimmick or is it the way we’ll be interacting with technology in the future?

Results of Madame Tussauds poll revealed.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON BUTTERBOOM: May 18, 2007
Remember 2 weeks back when we posted about this Madame Tussaud poll? Well, the results are in and pop-idol Janice Vidal (è¡›è˜) is the overwhelming winner:
Madame Tussauds Hong Kong will soon invite Janice for a sitting to take measurements for her wax figure. The replica is scheduled to be unveiled in July and Janice will undoubtedly become the hippest celebrity this summer!
Janice Vidal is one of the most sought after up-and-coming female singers in Hong Kong. Even as a newcomer to the entertainment industry, Janice has already release four albums and was named the Best Female Newcomer at the Hong Kong Music Awards in 2005, not to mention the numerous awards she received last year.
You might be interested to know that Janice is an interesting mix of Filipino, Chinese and Korean since she definitely has a more exotic look. And now that look will be cast in wax. Insert best wax joke here.

The best damn thing in Kowloon Bay.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON BUTTERBOOM: May 4, 2007
Avril came, she rocked, and she will return. Last night at HITEC as promised Avril Lavigne performed a mini-concert that showed us all how many fans she has in Hong Kong. Thanks to Meko and Sony BMG Music for hosting this event.
Avril came out and rocked out 5 songs in her 30-minute set playing songs from her new CD “The Best Damn Thing” as well as her classics “Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated” - its been awhile since we’ve been to a concert and its amazing how many digital cameras and camera phones lit up in the audience, it was almost as bright ON the floor as on the stage.
Here are more photos of the event:
