The designer’s amazing black collection for the upcoming season.

Recognized by her signature bob hairstyle, Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo is the founder of Comme des Garcons (CdG), which is French for “Just Like Boys”. She is a master in asymmetry. Her precision cuts, severe lines and focus on the silhouette are inspiration to many famous designers like Martin Margiela and Helmut Lang.
Born in Tokyo in 1942, Kawakubo has no training as a fashion designer. She studied fine arts and literature and conveys her ideas verbally to her pattern-makers. She started work at a textile company after graduation and began working as a freelance stylist in 1967. In 1973, she established CdG in Tokyo and moved to Paris in 1980.
