Designer Profile: Susanna Ngao of S.Nine
One to watch.

Susanna Ngao started S.Nine a year ago but is set to take the city by storm, designing a womenswear line that aims to fill the niche of pieces that are both classic yet functional with a modern and feminine touch. Her designs feature lots of drapings in her jersey and chiffon dresses which she mixes up with foundation pieces like blazers, shift dresses and tailored shirts. Think clothes you can wear from work to the cocktail bar – the perfect combination!
S.Nine has already managed to garner the attention of Hong Kong’s hip singer Kelly Chen who’s been spotted in a few of her pieces.
Susanna studied fashion at Parsons in New York and worked at Diane von Furstenberg before beginning an apprenticeship with Anne Valerie Hash in Paris. Susanna launched S.Nine soon after and takes a full hands-on approach to designing, branding, sourcing, manufacturing, selecting retailers and even designing her own website.
We caught up with Susanna to talk about her new label.
Butterboom: What does S.Nine stand for?
Susanna: S.Nine is a combination of my initial (SN-Susanna Ngao) and nine is my birth month, September.
Butterboom: How do you want S.Nine to be perceived?
Susanna: S.Nine is the fundamental of the lifestyle and aesthetic I am trying to express through my designs - a good balance of elegance, romance and relevance. The S.Nine woman is someone who is elegant, confident and romantic, and by romantic I mean she has the ability to imagine and to see life in a positive way.
Butterboom: Where is S.Nine sold?
Susanna: Right now the Fall/Winter collection is sold at boutiques in the States – Sunday Brunches, Trillium and Pieces. In Hong Kong, you can find S.Nine at boutiques all over the city including Craver in Causeway Bay, Fang Fong Project in Soho and GizzyNacho in Soho.
