Insider Guide: Web Whizz Adam Rugel on San Francisco
Adam Rugel’s favourite spots in San Francisco.
San Francisco, St Regis
Adam Rugel is the travel-industry dynamo behind online portal Open Places and Trazzler, where the Twitter world goes to share its real-experience-inspired travel microblogs (boutique hotel experts Mr & Mrs Smith have been known to post insights on their favourite away-from-home moments there, too). We caught up with this globetrotting web guru, and quizzed him on his current hometown of San Francisco.
Where to eat
I’m addicted to taqueria El Farolito, for the quesadilla suiza at 2am (beware of the drunks, though). And we love to stop at the best pizza place in the Bay Area, Pizzeria Picco, tucked away in a little Marin town called Larkspur.
What to do
You absolutely must try hiking the Lands End trail – the best city trail in the USA, never mind San Francisco. I also love to drive over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and explore the hiking trails in Marin County and Napa Valley, home to world-class wineries. Staying overnight for dinner with my girlfriend Angie makes it even better; we love wine retreat Hotel Healdsburg in Sonoma County. The weekend Healdsburg Farmers’ Market is not to be missed.
Where to stay
Mr & Mrs Smith recommends three boutique hotels in San Francisco, including elegant St Regis Hotel in the city’s cultural hub, boutique barracks Inn at the Presidio by the Bay and historic hotel Cavallo Point at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. Book with Smith for exclusive extras at all stays.
