Recognized by her signature bob hairstyle, Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo is the founder of Comme des Garcons (CdG), which is French for “Just Like Boys”. She is a master in asymmetry. Her precision cuts, severe lines and focus on the silhouette are inspiration to many famous designers like Martin Margiela and Helmut Lang.

Born in Tokyo in 1942, Kawakubo has no training as a fashion designer. She studied fine arts and literature and conveys her ideas verbally to her pattern-makers. She started work at a textile company after graduation and began working as a freelance stylist in 1967.  In 1973, she established CdG in Tokyo and moved to Paris in 1980.

Belgium designer Ann Demeulemeester, known for her gothic black and white designs has made an impact on the fashion world since her debut in the 1992 Paris fashion runway show. Ann is one of the “Antwerp Six”, influential avant-garde fashion designers like Dries Van Noten who graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts between 1980-1981.

Her latest collection is inspired from a book, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse – the story of Buddha’s journey to enlightenment.

Target’s latest “Go International” designer collaboration with Thakoon Panichgul is all about prints on classic resort dresses.

Thakoon became a household name when the First Lady- Elect, Michelle Obama wore his dress at the Democratic National Convention, the night her husband accepted the party’s presidential nomination. Thakoon Panichgul is 34-year old Thai American designer who’s clothes have been described as feminine, elegant, modern and refreshing by fashion editors.

Zufi Zufi Alexander Launches Bag Collection in Hong Kong

Zufi Alexander has been causing quite a stir with the fashion crowd with her handbag and accessories line. The Financial Times described her as a rising star and she was awarded “New Accessories Designer of the Year” at the 2005 London Fashion Week.

Originally from Dubai, Zufi Alexander’s grew up in the States and the UK, After 5 years working at Christie’s in London, she decided to pursue her passion for purses and started her own line in May 2004. Her bags are now sold at Henri Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue and have a celebrity following which includes Cate Blanchette, Beyonce and Sienna Miller. She has collaborated and designed a jewellery line with Erickson Beamon and Giuseppe Zanotti on a shoe collection.

If you’ve started to noticed that Loewe‘s bag looks a little big different, sense of boldness in shapes, use of brighter colours, you’ve probably reacting to the work of Loewe’s new creative director, Stuart Vevers.

At 34, Stuart is a bit of a veteran when it comes to designing bags, he’s started his career with Calvin Klein, was hand picked by Laura Moltedo, founder of Bottega Veneta and was part of the team that reinvigorate the brand, collaborated with Luella Bartley to design the “Gisele’ bag and then went to Givenchy to create the famous “Macrame” bag. More recently, before being poached by Loewe, he was at Mulberry. Did we mention that he was named the Accessories Designer of the Year 2006 at the British Fashion Awards.
