Anne Hathaway: In the Spotlight

Wednesday. 16 July. 2008. 9:10 am

The Get Smart star is looking good after a very public break-up.

annehathaway.jpg

The Cut has a great piece on Anne Hathaway after her break-up with her con-man boyfriend last week, the primary thread is that Anne didn’t go down in the dumps but high-styled it up in all her recent public appearances:

Anne’s come a long way from her days of looking like she walked out of a bad prom photo — these comfy-looking cocktail dresses are casual and flattering, youthful yet sophisticated. It proves there is middle ground between a full-on ball gown and wearing a tank top that hangs off your nipples while half an ass cheek falls out of your formal shorts. Now if only she would teach a seminar to Lindsay “Leggings” Lohan and the cast of The Hills.

Get Smart in Hong Kong

Thursday. 10 July. 2008. 9:07 am

New spy comedy opens in Hong Kong on August 7.

getsmart.jpg

Get Smart, the new Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway movie, finally makes it to Hong Kong on August 8th.

Some of you may remember the original TV series with Don Adams/Agent 86 and Barbara Feldon/Agent 99 that poked fun at the super-spy genre of the 1960’s. Definitely one of our favorite shows when we were kids - hey he had a mobile phone in his shoe - is now back starring the ‘40-Year Old Virgin’ and boss of ‘The Office’ in the role as Maxwell Smart and of course you all know the lovely Ms. Hathaway from ‘The Devil  Wears Prada’ and as the face of Lancome.

See the trailer below, and keep an eye out for more goodies from Warner Bros. Hong Kong that we will be posting as we work towards its opening in 4 weeks time:

Review: Wanted

Thursday. 3 July. 2008. 9:08 am

Would you kill one to save a thousand?

wanted.jpg

What would you do if you were asked to kill someone, knowing that that persons death would save 1 thousand other people? Could you do it? Kill someone to save more? That is the moral dilemma of the new film Wanted, and if you’re wondering if you should tackle the new Angelina Jolie movie in the theatre, the short answer is: Yes.

This is the Angelina you saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Tomb Raider taken to 11. And she’s not even the main character.

Review: 21

No surprise: counting blackjack cards isn’t fun to watch.

21movie.jpg

If you think the new movie 21 is going to teach you some tricks the next time you are in Macau, save the admission price for the slots.

21 is the story of a bunch of MIT students find a way to count cards playing blackjack with fast math on the brain, and an evil mentor (Kevin Spacey) that gives them all the tricks to play the dealers at the casino’s in Las Vegas. And it’s a true story. But of course since its a Hollywood 2-hour version of the truth, alot of it gets whitewashed over.

Gambling movies are rarely entertaining, so you already have a black mark against it. Kate Bosworth looks great, so you get sucked back in, then Lawrence “Morpheus” Fishburne shows up and you think it might be a good twist ending, but it never quite makes it there. Entertaining if you are sick of the superheroes and the big special effect movies, but easily something you’d catch on NowTV in a few months on a night when you’re recovering from a hangover.

21 opens in Hong Kong on Thursday. Order tickets online here. Trailer below:

Chiling Lin (Lin Chi-Ling), the Taiwanese leading actress in John Woo’s (upcoming movie Red Cliff, appears in the black silk satin twill dress with ivory trimming from the Spring 08 Ralph Lauren Collection during the Cannes Film Festival.

Not only is Lin a successful model having graced the covers of Maxim and Vogue, , she is official spokes model of China Airlines and she even has her own action figure.

Her biggest silver screen exposure will surely come from Woo’s new Three Kingdoms costume drama that is due out this summer in 2-parts, with part 1 hopefully coming out just before the Beijing Olympics. The trailer to Red Cliff is below, and while it may not have guns it does have doves:

Sex & the City Takes Top Spot

Tuesday. 3 June. 2008. 9:11 am

Carrie and the girls take down Dr. Jones.

sexandthecity2.jpg

Looks like the Sex and the City movie is a hit as it opened to a US$56 million opening weekend in the US, knocking Indiana Jones to the #2 spot.

If the streets seemed unusually devoid of women, that’s because they were likely lining up for “Sex,” the big-screen adaptation of the popular television series about the romantic and fashion dilemmas confronted by four Manhattanites.

Coming to theaters four years after they ended their six-season run on HBO, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her gal pals unleashed a frenzy among the show’s fans, who organized large gatherings to catch up with their heroines’ exploits.

Warner Bros. said women comprised 85 percent of the audience on Friday night.

“Women are great planners and they definitely wanted a girls’ night out,” said Dan Fellman, president of distribution at Warner Bros. He added that some women bought out an entire theater in Los Angeles’ Century City district for all their friends.

But anecdotal evidence indicated that Saturday’s screenings played more like date movies, with patient husbands and boyfriends perhaps making up a quarter of the crowd, he said.

And with the success of the movie, it didn’t take HBO long to announce a NEW series starring Kim Cattrall. Not based on her Samantha Jones character, but it sounds similar enough to attract a few SATC fans over. It’s called Sensitive Skin based on a UK-created series. Read more here.

On a musical note, and if you can’t wait till Thursday, HMV is having a special promotion for the soundtrack, if you purchase it now for HK$99 you can get 4 postcards from the movie. The track list is as follows:
