Carrie Chooses Mikimoto

Wednesday. 2 July. 2008. 9:29 am

Yes, we’re still talking about the Sex and the City movie.

We love to try and spot the fashion items in any movie we see, but this is taken to a whole new level when you see a movie like Sex and the City, where every shot has something to check out.

Carrie Bradshaw chose a Mikimoto opera-length cultured pearl necklace to replace her signature nameplate necklace in the movie. The 8.0-8.5mm Akoya cultured pearl necklace, 32-inches long, with Mikimoto’s signature clasp in 18K gold retails for US$11,900. The beautiful strand is featured throughout the film as Carrie’s “no outfit is complete without it” accessory.

Sex & the City Takes Top Spot

Tuesday. 3 June. 2008. 9:11 am

Carrie and the girls take down Dr. Jones.

sexandthecity2.jpg

Looks like the Sex and the City movie is a hit as it opened to a US$56 million opening weekend in the US, knocking Indiana Jones to the #2 spot.

If the streets seemed unusually devoid of women, that’s because they were likely lining up for “Sex,” the big-screen adaptation of the popular television series about the romantic and fashion dilemmas confronted by four Manhattanites.

Coming to theaters four years after they ended their six-season run on HBO, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her gal pals unleashed a frenzy among the show’s fans, who organized large gatherings to catch up with their heroines’ exploits.

Warner Bros. said women comprised 85 percent of the audience on Friday night.

“Women are great planners and they definitely wanted a girls’ night out,” said Dan Fellman, president of distribution at Warner Bros. He added that some women bought out an entire theater in Los Angeles’ Century City district for all their friends.

But anecdotal evidence indicated that Saturday’s screenings played more like date movies, with patient husbands and boyfriends perhaps making up a quarter of the crowd, he said.

And with the success of the movie, it didn’t take HBO long to announce a NEW series starring Kim Cattrall. Not based on her Samantha Jones character, but it sounds similar enough to attract a few SATC fans over. It’s called Sensitive Skin based on a UK-created series. Read more here.

On a musical note, and if you can’t wait till Thursday, HMV is having a special promotion for the soundtrack, if you purchase it now for HK$99 you can get 4 postcards from the movie. The track list is as follows:

Labels Or Love - Fergie
All Dressed In Love - Jennifer Hudson
Mercy - Duffy
The Look Of Love [Madison Park VS Lenny B Remix] - Nina Simone
New York Girls - Morningwood
All This Beauty - The Weepies

Review: We Will Rock You, Hong Kong

Friday. 23 May. 2008. 9:30 am

Unbelievable live rock musical brings it to Wan Chai.

wwry.jpg

We set this up for you in back in December, and now it’s finally here in Hong Kong and we’ll plainly state: We Will Rock You was worth waiting for.

The west-end musical based on music by Queen and Ben Elton is a nearly 3-hour top-to-bottom thrill ride of music, dancing, costumes, set pieces that is worth every penny of the ticket price.

Its the year 2350 and rock music has been banned, a young kid who has “dreams” of rock songs is the world’s only salvation. In between the “story,” we are treated to great performances of Queen songs like Another One Bites the Dust, We are the Champions, a tease of Flash Gordon and one other song we forget the name of, but we think we heard it before in the movie Wayne’s World ;-)

Hugely enjoyable, if you can still get good seats we suggest in the A section in the middle, further away but a great view of the entire stage. And don’t worry, the whole audience got into the performance with dancing and hand clapping as this show can get even the most anti-musical person on their feet and snapping their fingers.

We Will Rock You plays in Hong Kong until June 22 so you still have plenty of time to catch one of the shows which is great for music fans, Queen fans (like ourselves) as well as for those people who aren’t into musical theatre. A shortcut in through the magic of Freddie Mercury is all anyone needs. Tickets are here at HKTicketing.com.

The We Will Rock You the site is here and below we found an MTV interview clip of male lead MiG Ayesa from backstage of the show:

The American Idol 2008 Winner is…

Thursday. 22 May. 2008. 2:04 pm

C’mon, like you don’t know already.

davidcook.jpg

Even though American Idol Season 7 is running right now in Hong Kong on Star World, alebit a few episodes behind its airdates in the US, we’re going to spoil the last few episodes for you because its all over the web now and will be in all Hong Kong newspapers in the morning.

We want to preface this with the fact that we have never watched this show before, but something about a few of the contestants (like Michael Johns) roped us in to watch it, and the amazing vocal talents in what we wrote-off as a cheesy singing contest became must view television for the Butterboom team.

And so without further ado, the winner of American Idol Season 7 is….

Tommy Hilfiger Hits YouTube Generation

Monday. 21 April. 2008. 9:34 am

Famed clothing brand launches music video site.

tommytv.jpg

Obviously Tommy Hilfiger knows who is buying his clothes. The apparel titan (who through a licensing deal with Hong Kong’s Dickson Concepts operates over 108 Hilfiger outlets in Hong Kong and around Asia - 56 of them in China alone) has launched their own video website at TommyTV.com.

It just launched last week and doesn’t feature Hilfiger ads or fashion shows but purely very rare live concert footage from bands like Wyclef Jean, Good Charlotte, INXS (Micheal Hutchence era performances no less), John Legend, Incubus, DJ Krush and many more - in a very slick flash, streaming interface, all free and we’re sure it will grow.

Check out TommyTV here.
